THE COURSES GENERAL

The courses offered at the institute are drawn up within the frame work provided by the International. Convention on standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW-95) code. After successful completion of the courses the trainees will be able to demonstrate competency in serving at sea in the event of ship abandonment, minimizing the risk of fires, take immediate action upon encountering an accident, or medical emergency, comply with emergency procedures, observe safe working practices and effectively communicate with others.

Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) The aim of the course is to meet minimum requirements for seafarers. It familiarizes the basic safety trainings in accordance with Regulation VI/1 table A-VI/1-4 of STCW-95, code. The training makes seafarers comply with emergency procedures, and helps them take precautions on Maritime pollution prevention.

Personal Survival Technique (PST) This course covers the mandatory minimum requirement prescribed in regulation VI/1 and section A-VI/1 of STCW 95. Trainees who successfully complete and pass the course will be able to demonstrate the required minimum standards of competence set out in STCW-95, Table A-VI/1-1 for PST.

Elementary First Aid (EFA) This course covers the requirements of the STCW-95 convention, Section A-VI/1 Table A-VI/1-3. On complement of the training, the seafarer is expected to be capable of taking immediate first aid care encountering accidents on board.

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF) This mandatory course covers basic requirements of the convention STCW-95 Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-2. Upon successful completion of this course, the trainees will be capable of correctly using fire appliances and take measures for the safety of persons, the ship and entire property on board. They can also acquire knowledge and skill on how to react during the out break of fires.

Marine English for Ratings The course will help trainees develop their ability to communicate their thoughts, ideas, and feelings using the English language peculiar to the seafaring profession (and relevant to the safety of life at sea). Teaching of maritime English is recommended in the English language guide unit of part B-VI/1 of STCW Code, 1995.

Entry Standard for all Courses
Trainees must have completed at least secondary school education for the four mandatory courses and/or at least six months of sea service time under the supervision of a qualified officer for watch keeping courses.
Duration
Five days (40 hours) for all courses except watch keeping course which takes two weeks or 80 hours.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the courses and meeting the assessment criteria, trainees will be issued certificates by the institute endorsed by Maritime Administration Authority which will enable them to work on board different ships internationally.
